Journal Policies
Aims and Scope
Mabatim is a peer-reviewed academic annual published in Hebrew by the Department of the Arts at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
The journal is included in the list of journals recognized by the Council for Higher Education’s Planning and Budgeting Committee (PBC).
Published in an online open-access format, the journal provides a platform for the publication of original scholarly articles in the fields of art and visual culture, spanning all periods, subjects, and media.
In addition, the journal includes sections devoted to exhibition reviews and reviews of scholarly books.
The primary language of publication is Hebrew. All articles include abstracts in both Hebrew and English.

Open access
This journal provides immediate open access to its content.
By “open access” to [peer-reviewed research literature], we mean its free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain, should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited.
There are no article processing charges, submission fees, or any other costs required of authors to submit articles to or publish articles in this journal.

The author bears full and exclusive responsibility for the content of the article. The journal Mabatim shall bear no responsibility in cases of plagiarism or any other infringement committed by the author.
The author undertakes to indemnify and hold the publisher harmless against any damages, losses, expenses, or payments (including legal costs and attorneys’ fees) arising from any claim, demand, or legal proceeding related to the content of the article.
The author retains full copyright in the article. No transfer of copyright is required for publication. Any future transfer of copyright, if agreed upon, must be executed in writing between the author and the journal Mabatim.

Peer review
To provide an expert, fair, and unbiased evaluation of the article’s strengths and weaknesses.
Guiding questions for reviewers:
● Does the article offer an original contribution to the field?
● Is the argument persuasive?
● Does the author make appropriate use of up-to-date scholarly literature?
● Does the article make a meaningful contribution to research in the field?
● What are the article’s main strengths and weaknesses?
● Is the article well written (clear, coherent, and fluent writing)?
● Should the article be published? If revisions are required, please specify them.
● Should the article be rejected? If so, please explain the main shortcomings of the submission.
Publication frequency
Mabatim journal is published once per year.
Author Fees
The journal does not charge authors any article processing charges (APCs) or submission fees.
Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement
Mabatim is committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics. The journal follows the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Authors must ensure that their work is original, not under consideration elsewhere, and that all sources and materials (including images) are properly cited and used with permission. All authors must approve the submission and disclose any conflicts of interest.
Editors evaluate submissions based on academic merit and are responsible for ensuring a fair, unbiased, and confidential peer review process.
Reviewers are expected to provide objective and constructive evaluations, maintain confidentiality, and disclose any conflicts of interest.
The journal does not tolerate plagiarism or unethical research practices. In cases of suspected misconduct, appropriate action will be taken in accordance with COPE guidelines, including rejection, correction, or retraction of published articles.
Archiving and preservation policy
The journal participates in the PKP Preservation Network (PN), which provides long-term digital preservation and secure archiving of published content.
