Abstract

This article examines a heavily scribbled Hebrew manuscript page from Parma MS 3084 as a case study for understanding scribal practices beyond formal text production. The page contains approximately 113 distinct scribbles, ranging from biblical verses and ownership formulas to Italian phrases and more. Produced by multiple hands, these elements overlap without order, creating a multilayered, cacophonous surface. Many of these scribbles are not unique to this page and appear on other pages from the same period. The article proposes three complementary approaches: diachronic reading, synchronic-spatial reading, and sociological reading.
